How to Estimate Asphalt – CCS Construction’s Guide

Accurately estimating asphalt is essential to keeping your job on track and within budget. Whether you’re a contractor or a property owner, ordering too much or too little can cost you time and money. At CCS Construction, we’ve built this step-by-step guide to help you measure, plan, and order the right amount every time—especially when paired with our online asphalt calculator.

1. Evaluate the Base

Start by assessing what you’re paving over.
If it’s an existing surface, check for cracks, dips, or other damage. A weak or shifting base will need extra asphalt for leveling and strength.

Gravel bases usually need a thicker layer than concrete, since they can settle over time. A smooth, solid base means less material and longer-lasting results.

2. Measure the Area

Grab your tape measure and record the length and width of the space.
For straight-line areas like driveways or rectangular lots, multiply length by width to get square footage. For curvy or odd shapes, break it down into smaller boxes and add those up.

Don’t forget depth. It matters more than most people realize. Light traffic areas might only need 2–4 inches, but for heavy use—like loading zones or parking lots—you’ll want 6–8 inches for strength and durability.

3. Calculate the Volume

Take your square footage and multiply it by the depth (converted to feet).
That gives you volume in cubic feet. Divide that number by 27 to get cubic yards, which is the industry standard for ordering materials.

Here’s an example:
A 1,000 square foot area with 3 inches of asphalt equals about 92.6 cubic yards.

4. Add for Compaction

Once asphalt is rolled and compacted, the volume shrinks.
To keep from running short, we recommend adding around 10% to your final number. Some jobs may require a little more, depending on the equipment and site conditions.

What Can Affect Asphalt Quantities?

Traffic Load

The more weight the surface needs to handle, the thicker and tougher your asphalt needs to be. Heavy trucks and frequent traffic call for a deeper pour and stronger mix.

Weather and Climate

Hot summers? Cold winters? The climate where you’re paving matters. Some asphalt mixes hold up better in heat, others in freeze-thaw cycles. Also, laying asphalt in cooler months may require special planning.

Tack Coat and Extras

Most jobs need a tack coat—a thin, sticky adhesive that helps new layers bond together. Depending on your site, you may also need added materials or modifiers to improve durability.

Know Your Asphalt Mixes

Each type of asphalt has a purpose. Choosing the right one can make or break the outcome of your project.

  • Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA)
The go-to mix for most paving jobs. It’s made at high temperatures and offers strong, long-lasting results.
  • Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA)
Used at lower temps than HMA. It’s eco-friendlier, saves energy, and cuts down on emissions.
  • Cold Mix Asphalt
Ideal for quick fixes like patching potholes. No heat needed—just apply and go.
  • Porous Asphalt
Designed to let water drain through. Great for parking lots or areas that need better stormwater control.
  • Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP)
Made by recycling old asphalt. It’s budget-friendly and reduces waste.
  • Asphalt Concrete (aka Blacktop)
A mix of asphalt cement and stone aggregate. It’s what most people picture when they think of a paved surface.
